Arbolia, the benefit corporation launched by Snam and Fondazione Cassa Depositi e Prestiti in the second half of 2020 to develop new green areas in Italian cities, has created a new urban forest with 400 trees in the Municipality of Pignataro Maggiore, in the province of Caserta (Southern Italy).
The trees have been planted in recent days in an area of the southern slope of the hillside, near the Monastery of Santa Croce.
In the selected area, 300 holm oaks and 100 shrubs of three different species (strawberry tree, boxwood and juniper) have been planted which, when fully operational, will allow the absorption of 27 tons of CO2 per year and about 18 kg of PM10 per year.
Arbolia will also take care of the maintenance of the forest for the first two years. The initiative was born from the collaboration between the Municipality of Pignataro Maggiore and Arbolia and was made possible thanks to the contribution of Snam.
"This project - comments Emanuele Gesù, Head of Innovation and Special Projects at Snam - testifies to our company's attention to the environment and territories, not only through investments in decarbonisation projects in various sectors such as sustainable mobility but also with initiatives to favor of community well-being and air quality such as the new urban forest of Pignataro Maggiore".
Pignataro Maggiore is the first urban forestry project carried out by Arbolia in Southern Italy together with the one currently underway at the Botanical Garden of Lecce.
Arbolia is a benefit corporation created at the end of 2020 by Snam and the CDP Foundation to create new green areas in Italy, contributing to the fight against climate change and sustainable development of the territories.
Arbolia designs, promotes and implements afforestation and reforestation initiatives on land made available by the public administration and private individuals, with the financial support of companies and individuals.
In addition to planting, Arbolia also takes care of the care and maintenance of the trees for the first two years, relieving the public administration of the related burdens.
